COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree is a unique 3-year programme, designed to prepare students for a professional career in applied computing, E-services and informatics, networks and security, Software development and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning, Research. This produces a BSc.IT graduate with knowledge needed in Information Technology and computing related fields, research and is able to undertake advanced study in computing and related fields.

The programme exposes students to a solid foundation in, software and hardware maintenance, database and data management, programming and software engineering, networks and security, E-service and informatics.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. Design, develop and document useful programs/ software of moderate size and complexity, use efficient coding techniques, create maintainable and reusable code, work on a development team.

  2. Analyze, design, configure, administer and audit computer networks.

  3. Develop a business plan for an e-commerce initiative and design and implement an information system for e-business.

  4. Discuss theories and philosophies of project success and failure, explain what project management is, discuss the key elements of the project management framework, describe the role and responsibilities of the project manager and describe the systems view of project management.

  5. Be able to produce new and reliable knowledge through research.

  6. Evaluate, analyze and suggest Information Technology solutions to the needs of business enterprises.

  7. Stay current and updated in emerging technologies through training and self-learning

Entry requirements

  1. Direct Entry

Admission by Direct Entry Admission to the first year of the program will require a student to have attained;

  1. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and passed with at least a credit in mathematics

  2. Uganda Advanced Level Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least two principal passes, obtained in the same sitting.

  3. In the event that the applicant has no credit in mathematics at UCE, they should have passed Sub-mathematics at UACE.

  1. The Diploma Holders Entry

Applicant should hold a diploma in Information Technology or its equivalent from a higher institution of learning recognized by National Council of Higher Education (NCHE).

The applicant should have attained a cumulative grade point (CGPA) of at least 3.0 in their diploma award.

  1. The Mature Age/ Special Entry

  1. Candidate for the Mature Age/Special Entry scheme must be Ugandan nationals of at least 22 years and have had formal education.

  2. Those who are successful, in both the written and the oral examination, are then considered for admission.

  3. In the case of international applicants, their academic documents have to be assesses by UNEB to evaluate the qualification and rating against the Ugandan System. This will then be checked against the other entry requirements before being considered.

  4. In the event that an applicant is seeking to transfer from a programme in a Ugandan university, the departmental academic team will assess their qualifications (credits) against the UCU system to ascertain their possible level of entry before consideration for admission.

The program will be taught using the blended approach; online and face-to-face teaching.
